Contoy is situated at the beginning of the second largest coral reef chain in the world. Its beaches are shallow, clear, and calm, with an abundance of underwater life that will thrill any snorkeler. 30 minutes north of Isla Mujeres by boat, lies the enchanted island of Contoy. Enjoy an unforgettable experience crossing the majestic Caribbean Sea to a place that few have had the privilege to discover. This virgin island barely 5.2 miles long and only 70 ft. wide at its narrowest point, was declared aNational Wildlife Reserve in 1961. Contoy Island is internationally famous for its flora & fauna, especially for its birds of which there are more than 90 species that are considered either resident or migratory.The Island is practically deserted. Scarcity of fresh water has
discouraged habitation by man, except for biologists who occasionally conduct isolated research. There are several sheltered saltwater lagoons surrounded by mangroves and palms that make it the most important naturalrefuge for birds in the Caribbean. Large colonies of brown pelicans and magnificent frigates share Contoy with herons, pink spatulas, swallows, ibis, and the occasional flock of flamingos. Its fine sandy beaches are also an important breeding environment for birds and several species of sea turtle such as the locally named " Caguama" (Green turtle) " white turtle", the "Carey" (hawksbill) and the " laud" (leatherback).
